how to log into WordPress

Basic Tutorial #4:

How to Log Into WordPress

How do you get back into your WordPress Dashboard (some people refer to it as the admin area) after you’ve installed WordPress?

It’s pretty simple, but I’ve had enough questions about it over the years that it deserves its own tutorial.

  1. Open a browser window and type yourdomain.com/wp-login.php into the address bar.
  2. Fill in the username or email address and password you selected when you installed WordPress
  3. Click the Log In button

Once you’ve done that, you’ll see your WordPress dashboard. Other names for this are admin area and back end.

Some hosts also allow you to log into your dashboard directly from your hosting account, but that is absolutely not necessary and just adds an extra step. So, if you have one of those hosts (like Siteground), you can log directly into your WordPress back end from your hosting account if that’s convenient for you, but you don’t have to do it that way.

Note that in future I’m going to advise you to change your login URL. That’s because every hacker on the planet knows that standard WordPress address. Changing it is a great way to stop hackers in their tracks. If you’re ready to explore it, check out the article here, but if you’re just starting out, let’s keep it simple for now.

Now, let’s go on to the next step, how to install a WordPress theme.
